DEPARTURE OVERVIEW

Maldives' Main Departure Points

In the Maldives, everything begins at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé island. From the adjacent jetties and the nearby Hulhumalé marina, you connect onward by speedboat, seaplane or ferry — to your resort, your liveaboard safari boat, or a day excursion. Here are the key departure points and how they work.

Hulhulé · Airport

Velana Airport Jetty (MLE)

Speedboat & Resort Transfer

The main arrival point. Resort speedboats, shared transfer boats and dhonis depart from the jetties beside the terminal — your first step from plane to island.

Hulhulé · Airport

Seaplane Terminal (TMA)

Seaplane Transfer

Trans Maldivian and Manta Air seaplanes depart from the lagoon terminal beside the airport, flying guests directly to far-flung resort islands. Daylight operations only.

5 min from terminal Details

Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé Marina & Ferry Terminal

Liveaboards & Excursions

A short drive from the airport via the Sinamalé Bridge. Most liveaboard safari boats board here, and day-excursion and ferry boats depart from the adjacent jetties.

10 min from airport Details

Malé

Malé Local Ferry Jetties

Public & Speedboat Ferries

Malé's waterfront jetties serve government MTCC ferries and private speedboat ferries to inhabited local islands such as Maafushi — the budget gateway to local-island stays.

Across the harbour, Malé Details

Domestic Airports

Regional Airport Jetties

Fly-then-Boat

For southern atolls, a domestic flight to a regional airport (e.g. Dharavandhoo for Baa, Gan for Addu) connects to a speedboat or seaplane jetty for the final hop to your island.

Resort Islands

Resort Jetties & Excursion Boats

Snorkel & Dive Trips

Each resort and local island has its own jetty from which dhoni excursions depart — snorkelling, diving, dolphin cruises, sandbank picnics and sunset trips.

At your island Details

Booking note: For every Book Maldives Holiday package, all transfer logistics — meet-and-greet at Velana, speedboat or seaplane to your island, liveaboard boarding and return to the airport — are arranged by our team. You never have to navigate the jetties alone. Contact us to plan your transfers and excursions.

HULHULÉ · AIRPORT JETTY

Velana Airport Jetty — Your Gateway

Velana International Airport (MLE) sits on Hulhulé island, and its jetties are where almost every Maldives holiday begins. From here, resort speedboats, shared transfer boats and traditional dhonis whisk you to your island the moment you clear immigration.

Jetty status: Open, fully operational — May 2026

Departure Information

Location Velana International Airport (MLE), Hulhulé island, adjacent to Malé and Hulhumalé
Transfer types Resort speedboat, shared transfer boat, private dhoni, and onward seaplane from the nearby terminal
Speedboat range Roughly 15–90 minutes for resorts in North & South Malé Atoll and nearby atolls
Meet & greet Resort and agency hosts wait in the arrivals hall with name boards, then escort you to the correct jetty
Operating hours Speedboats run day and night; seaplane transfers operate in daylight only
Luggage Porters move your bags from the terminal straight onto the transfer boat — you rarely lift a thing

Airport & Jetty Facilities

Clean restrooms Café & waiting lounge Souvenir shops ATM on site Free Wi-Fi Taxi & transfer zone Luggage storage Restaurant

Best Season for Transfers

Transfers run all year. Seas are calmest and skies clearest in the dry north-east monsoon (December–April); the wetter season (May–November) brings short showers but boats operate normally:

Liveaboards Boarding Near the Airport

May 2026 note: May begins the wetter south-west monsoon, with short showers between sunny spells. Speedboat transfers run as normal; seaplanes operate in daylight, so for far atolls we time your international flight to land by early afternoon. This season is also excellent for manta snorkelling at Hanifaru Bay.

HULHULÉ · SEAPLANE TERMINAL

Seaplane Terminal & Scenic Transfers

For resorts in the more distant atolls, a seaplane is the most spectacular way to arrive — a low-level flight over a kaleidoscope of reefs and sandbanks before landing on your resort's lagoon. Seaplanes depart from the dedicated lagoon terminal beside Velana International Airport.

Seaplane Information

Departure point Seaplane terminal beside Velana International Airport, Hulhulé island
Operators Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) and Manta Air — the world's largest seaplane fleets
Flight time Typically 20–55 minutes direct to your resort's lagoon, depending on the atoll
Daylight only Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so international flights are timed to land in Malé by early afternoon
Baggage A weight allowance applies (typically ~20–25 kg); excess can usually be sent on a later flight

Seaplane vs speedboat: Speedboats are ideal for resorts near Malé; seaplanes reach far-flung islands and deliver unforgettable aerial views of the atolls. We match the right transfer to your resort and flight times, and handle the lounge wait at the seaplane terminal.

Best Season for Seaplane Transfers

Seaplanes operate year-round in daylight. The dry season (December–April) offers the clearest skies and smoothest flights; the wetter season may bring brief weather holds:

Why the Seaplane Is Special

The seaplane flight is a highlight in its own right — a barefoot-pilot, propeller-driven hop over turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and tiny sandbanks, often with mantas or dolphins visible below. Many guests rate the transfer among the most memorable moments of their Maldives trip.

HULHUMALÉ · LIVEABOARD MARINA

Hulhumalé Marina — Liveaboard Boarding

Most Maldives liveaboard dive and snorkel safaris board at Hulhumalé, the reclaimed island just minutes from Velana International Airport via the Sinamalé (China–Maldives Friendship) Bridge. It is the practical, comfortable starting point for 3–7 night safaris cruising the central atolls.

Hulhumalé marina & ferry terminal fully operational — May 2026

Liveaboard Boarding Information

Location Hulhumalé marina and jetties, a short drive from Velana International Airport across the Sinamalé Bridge
Typical safari 3 to 7 nights cruising the central atolls (North & South Malé, Ari and Vaavu), with a dedicated dive dhoni alongside
Boarding time Usually mid-to-late afternoon; the boat then repositions overnight to the first dive site
Disembarkation Safaris return to Hulhumalé on the final morning, timed to connect with afternoon/evening flights home
Day before/after A pre- or post-cruise night in a Hulhumalé hotel is easy to add — handy for early flights and the 18–24 hour no-fly rule

Getting to Hulhumalé Marina

From the airport by car: about 10 minutes across the Sinamalé Bridge. We arrange a private transfer from arrivals straight to the marina or your hotel.
Airport bus / taxi: a public airport bus and taxis also link Velana with Hulhumalé for independent travellers.
Stay nearby first: Hulhumalé has many hotels and guesthouses, ideal for an overnight before a morning departure or after a late-night flight.
Boarding support: our local contact meets you for liveaboard check-in, handling luggage and paperwork so you simply step aboard.

Liveaboards run year-round. The dry season (December–April) has the calmest seas and best visibility, while the wetter months bring plankton blooms and superb manta action at Hanifaru Bay.

Hulhumalé is the launch point for our liveaboard safaris — from the Emperor Explorer and Maldives Aggressor dive boats to the family-friendly Island-Hopping Cruise. It pairs perfectly with a resort or local-island stay either side of your safari. We handle every transfer and boarding detail.

MALÉ · LOCAL FERRY JETTIES

Malé Jetties — Local-Island Ferries

Malé's harbour-front jetties are the gateway to the Maldives' inhabited local islands. Government MTCC ferries and private speedboat ferries depart here for islands such as Maafushi — the affordable way to experience real Maldivian island life, beaches and guesthouse stays.

Ferry Departure Points

Villingili Ferry Terminal On Malé's waterfront — the main hub for public MTCC atoll ferries to nearby inhabited islands. Cheap, scheduled, and used by locals and budget travellers.
Speedboat Ferry Jetties Private speedboat ferries to Maafushi and other South Malé Atoll local islands depart several times daily — faster than the public ferry (around 30–45 minutes to Maafushi).
Maafushi The most popular local island — guesthouses, a tourist "bikini beach", sandbank trips, snorkelling and diving. Reached by public ferry or speedboat from Malé.
Public vs speedboat Public MTCC ferries are cheapest but slower and run only on set days; speedboat ferries cost a little more and run more frequently. We book whichever suits your schedule.
Best time to travel Year-round; the dry season (December–April) offers the calmest crossings. Check ferry timings, as public services don't run on Fridays in some cases.

Local-Island Experiences

Sandbank picnics — Excursions from Maafushi visit pristine sandbanks for swimming, snorkelling and a barbecue lunch on the sand.
Snorkelling & diving — Local dive centres run trips to nearby reefs, turtle sites and channels, with PADI courses for beginners.
Dolphin & sunset cruises — Traditional dhoni cruises at dusk to watch spinner dolphins and the sunset — a local-island highlight.
Local culture — Tuna markets, friendly cafés serving mas huni and short eats, and authentic island life away from the resorts.

REGIONAL AIRPORTS & RESORT JETTIES

Regional Airports & Resort Excursion Jetties

Beyond the capital region, two more departure layers complete the picture: regional domestic airports that feed the far atolls by a short flight-then-boat hop, and the resort jetties from which your daily snorkel, dive and sandbank excursions set out.

Regional Domestic Airports

Dharavandhoo (Baa) Domestic airport serving Baa Atoll. A short flight from Malé, then a speedboat to your resort — the gateway to Hanifaru Bay manta snorkelling.
Gan (Addu) In the deep south of the Maldives. A domestic flight from Malé reaches Gan, with a short causeway or speedboat hop to Addu's islands, wrecks and reefs.
Maamigili (South Ari) Domestic airport for South Ari Atoll — the year-round whale-shark zone — with quick speedboat connections to resorts and Dhigurah.
How it works Fly Malé → regional airport on Maldivian or Manta Air, then transfer by speedboat (or seaplane) to your island. We time the connections so there's no rush.
Best season Year-round; the dry months (December–April) offer the smoothest flights and calmest crossings.

Resort & Island Excursion Jetties

Snorkel & dive trips Dhonis depart your resort or local-island jetty for reef, channel and drop-off sites — guided by the on-site dive centre.
Manta & whale-shark trips Seasonal excursions to Hanifaru Bay (Baa) for mantas and to South Ari Atoll for year-round whale sharks set off from resort jetties.
Sandbank & picnic trips Short dhoni hops to private sandbanks for swimming, snorkelling and a barbecue lunch — a Maldives signature.
Dolphin & sunset cruises Evening dhoni cruises to watch spinner dolphins and the sunset, departing from the resort jetty in the late afternoon.

All excursions are arranged for you: simply book through your resort's water-sports desk or with our team in advance. We can pre-reserve manta and whale-shark trips so your dates line up with the best chances of an encounter.

Baa Atoll
Hanifaru Bay Manta Season

Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is one of the world's best places to snorkel with manta rays and, at times, whale sharks. The plankton-rich south-west monsoon (roughly May to November) is peak season. Access is regulated to protect the wildlife, so book through a licensed operator — we arrange permits and timing.

South Ari Atoll
Whale Sharks Year-Round

South Ari Atoll is famous for whale sharks all year round — the gentle giants feed near the reef edge and can be snorkelled with on guided excursions from resort jetties at Maamigili and Dhigurah. Trips run throughout the year, so this is a reliable bucket-list encounter whenever you visit.

Practical
Booking Excursions

Most resort excursions can be booked on arrival at the water-sports desk, but popular trips — manta and whale-shark snorkelling, sunset dolphin cruises and private sandbank picnics — fill quickly in peak season. Pre-book through our team to secure your preferred dates, especially for Hanifaru Bay which has limited daily access.
