Departure ports, embarkation details, facilities, seasonal conditions, and transfer logistics for every major cruise and boat journey in Maldives — all in one place.
In the Maldives, everything begins at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé island. From the adjacent jetties and the nearby Hulhumalé marina, you connect onward by speedboat, seaplane or ferry — to your resort, your liveaboard safari boat, or a day excursion. Here are the key departure points and how they work.
Hulhulé · Airport
Velana Airport Jetty (MLE)
Speedboat & Resort TransferThe main arrival point. Resort speedboats, shared transfer boats and dhonis depart from the jetties beside the terminal — your first step from plane to island.
Hulhulé · Airport
Seaplane Terminal (TMA)
Seaplane TransferTrans Maldivian and Manta Air seaplanes depart from the lagoon terminal beside the airport, flying guests directly to far-flung resort islands. Daylight operations only.
Hulhumalé
Hulhumalé Marina & Ferry Terminal
Liveaboards & ExcursionsA short drive from the airport via the Sinamalé Bridge. Most liveaboard safari boats board here, and day-excursion and ferry boats depart from the adjacent jetties.
Malé
Malé Local Ferry Jetties
Public & Speedboat FerriesMalé's waterfront jetties serve government MTCC ferries and private speedboat ferries to inhabited local islands such as Maafushi — the budget gateway to local-island stays.
Domestic Airports
Regional Airport Jetties
Fly-then-BoatFor southern atolls, a domestic flight to a regional airport (e.g. Dharavandhoo for Baa, Gan for Addu) connects to a speedboat or seaplane jetty for the final hop to your island.
Resort Islands
Resort Jetties & Excursion Boats
Snorkel & Dive TripsEach resort and local island has its own jetty from which dhoni excursions depart — snorkelling, diving, dolphin cruises, sandbank picnics and sunset trips.
Booking note: For every Book Maldives Holiday package, all transfer logistics — meet-and-greet at Velana, speedboat or seaplane to your island, liveaboard boarding and return to the airport — are arranged by our team. You never have to navigate the jetties alone. Contact us to plan your transfers and excursions.
Velana International Airport (MLE) sits on Hulhulé island, and its jetties are where almost every Maldives holiday begins. From here, resort speedboats, shared transfer boats and traditional dhonis whisk you to your island the moment you clear immigration.
Transfers run all year. Seas are calmest and skies clearest in the dry north-east monsoon (December–April); the wetter season (May–November) brings short showers but boats operate normally:
May 2026 note: May begins the wetter south-west monsoon, with short showers between sunny spells. Speedboat transfers run as normal; seaplanes operate in daylight, so for far atolls we time your international flight to land by early afternoon. This season is also excellent for manta snorkelling at Hanifaru Bay.
For resorts in the more distant atolls, a seaplane is the most spectacular way to arrive — a low-level flight over a kaleidoscope of reefs and sandbanks before landing on your resort's lagoon. Seaplanes depart from the dedicated lagoon terminal beside Velana International Airport.
Seaplane vs speedboat: Speedboats are ideal for resorts near Malé; seaplanes reach far-flung islands and deliver unforgettable aerial views of the atolls. We match the right transfer to your resort and flight times, and handle the lounge wait at the seaplane terminal.
Seaplanes operate year-round in daylight. The dry season (December–April) offers the clearest skies and smoothest flights; the wetter season may bring brief weather holds:
The seaplane flight is a highlight in its own right — a barefoot-pilot, propeller-driven hop over turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and tiny sandbanks, often with mantas or dolphins visible below. Many guests rate the transfer among the most memorable moments of their Maldives trip.
Most Maldives liveaboard dive and snorkel safaris board at Hulhumalé, the reclaimed island just minutes from Velana International Airport via the Sinamalé (China–Maldives Friendship) Bridge. It is the practical, comfortable starting point for 3–7 night safaris cruising the central atolls.
Liveaboards run year-round. The dry season (December–April) has the calmest seas and best visibility, while the wetter months bring plankton blooms and superb manta action at Hanifaru Bay.
Hulhumalé is the launch point for our liveaboard safaris — from the Emperor Explorer and Maldives Aggressor dive boats to the family-friendly Island-Hopping Cruise. It pairs perfectly with a resort or local-island stay either side of your safari. We handle every transfer and boarding detail.
Malé's harbour-front jetties are the gateway to the Maldives' inhabited local islands. Government MTCC ferries and private speedboat ferries depart here for islands such as Maafushi — the affordable way to experience real Maldivian island life, beaches and guesthouse stays.
Beyond the capital region, two more departure layers complete the picture: regional domestic airports that feed the far atolls by a short flight-then-boat hop, and the resort jetties from which your daily snorkel, dive and sandbank excursions set out.
All excursions are arranged for you: simply book through your resort's water-sports desk or with our team in advance. We can pre-reserve manta and whale-shark trips so your dates line up with the best chances of an encounter.
Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is one of the world's best places to snorkel with manta rays and, at times, whale sharks. The plankton-rich south-west monsoon (roughly May to November) is peak season. Access is regulated to protect the wildlife, so book through a licensed operator — we arrange permits and timing.
South Ari Atoll is famous for whale sharks all year round — the gentle giants feed near the reef edge and can be snorkelled with on guided excursions from resort jetties at Maamigili and Dhigurah. Trips run throughout the year, so this is a reliable bucket-list encounter whenever you visit.
Most resort excursions can be booked on arrival at the water-sports desk, but popular trips — manta and whale-shark snorkelling, sunset dolphin cruises and private sandbank picnics — fill quickly in peak season. Pre-book through our team to secure your preferred dates, especially for Hanifaru Bay which has limited daily access.
