Thoddoo is the Maldives' garden — a green, fertile local island at the northern tip of Ari Atoll that grows much of the country's fruit and vegetables. While most Maldivian islands are pure sand and palm, Thoddoo's interior is given over to neat fields of watermelon, papaya, banana, chilli and leafy greens, watered from a freshwater table that is unusually high for an atoll island. It is famous nationwide as the "fruit island", supplying watermelons by the boatload to Malé and the resorts, especially around Ramadan. Wrapped around all that farmland is a classic Maldivian fringe: powder-white beaches, a vivid turquoise lagoon and a healthy reef.
For Indian travellers, Thoddoo offers the best of both worlds — the laid-back authenticity of a working local island, and one of the loveliest, longest bikini beaches of any guesthouse island in the country. You can spend the morning snorkelling with turtles and reef fish, the afternoon cycling between fruit fields and tasting a sun-warm slice of Thoddoo watermelon, and the evening watching the sun drop over the western reef. It is calmer and greener than busy Maafushi, with a strong sense of place and genuinely friendly islanders.
Getting here is easy by Maldivian standards: a speedboat from Malé takes around 90 minutes, or you can arrive by seaplane for the scenic option. As an inhabited Muslim island, Thoddoo sells no alcohol, asks for modest dress in the village, and has a long screened tourist beach for swimwear. Two to four nights suits most travellers — enough to fully enjoy the beach and reef, do a sandbank or snorkelling trip, tour a fruit farm, and settle into the gentle, green rhythm that makes Thoddoo special.
Best Time to Visit Thoddoo
Thoddoo follows the Maldives' two-monsoon pattern. The dry north-east monsoon (Iruvai), roughly December to April, brings calm seas, clear skies and the best snorkelling, while the wet south-west monsoon (Hulhangu), May to November, is warmer and rainier — which is, conveniently, when the island's farms are at their most lush and productive. Temperatures sit at 27–31°C all year, with a bath-warm sea of 28–30°C.
For Indian travelers: Best months for Indian travellers: November to April — calm lagoon, clear water for snorkelling and turtle-spotting, glassy sandbank trips and the easiest speedboat crossings. February and March are the sunniest peak. May to November is the green, value season — short bursts of warm rain, lower guesthouse rates, and the fruit fields at their greenest. The big watermelon harvest peaks around the dry months and Ramadan.

Top Attractions in Thoddoo
1. Thoddoo Bikini Beach
FreeDaylight; sunrise and sunset best⏱ Half to full day
Thoddoo's headline — one of the longest and most beautiful designated tourist beaches of any local island in the Maldives. A broad sweep of soft white sand on the western side of the island, backed by palms and fronting a brilliant turquoise lagoon, with space to find your own quiet stretch. It is screened so that swimwear is permitted, and the sunsets here, over an open western horizon, are superb.
Swimwear is fine on this designated beach but nowhere else on the island — change before heading into the village. The western aspect makes it a sunset beach; come late afternoon for the best light. Loungers and snorkel gear can be hired nearby.
2. Watermelon & Fruit Farms
Free to visit; buy fruit cheaplyDaytime⏱ 1–2 hours
What makes Thoddoo unique. The island's green interior is a patchwork of farms growing watermelon, papaya, banana, chilli, betel leaf and vegetables — Thoddoo is the Maldives' agricultural powerhouse, sending fruit across the country. Wandering or cycling between the fields, watching farmers at work and tasting a sun-warm slice of Thoddoo watermelon is a delicious, only-here experience found on no resort island.
Ask your guesthouse when the watermelon harvest is on — it peaks around the dry season and Ramadan. Buy fruit straight from the farms at a fraction of city prices. Early morning is cooler and best for a farm cycle. Bring a hat; the fields have little shade.
3. House Reef & Snorkelling
Free off the beach; boat trips ₹1,500–₹3,000Daylight⏱ 1–3 hours
Thoddoo is ringed by a healthy reef you can often snorkel straight off the beach. Expect coral gardens busy with parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and the chance of green turtles and reef sharks in the shallows. Boat trips reach more distant reefs and reliable turtle spots when you want a guided outing.
Ask your guesthouse where the reef drop-off is closest for shore snorkelling. Visibility is best in the dry season (December–April). Never touch or stand on the coral. A rash vest and reef-safe sunscreen are essential.
4. Turtle Snorkelling Trip
₹1,500–₹3,000/personDaylight⏱ 2–3 hours
The reefs and seagrass beds around Thoddoo are good turtle habitat, and short boat trips visit the spots where green and hawksbill turtles reliably feed and rest. Snorkelling quietly beside a wild turtle in clear, warm water is one of the island's most loved excursions.
Keep a respectful distance and never touch or chase the turtles. Calm dry-season mornings give the best visibility. Often combined with a reef or sandbank stop into a half-day trip.
A short boat ride from Thoddoo, bare coral sandbanks rise from the lagoon — strips of pure white sand surrounded by open turquoise sea. Guesthouses run picnic trips that drop you on a private sandbank with snorkelling gear, shade and lunch, for a classic desert-island afternoon.
Sandbanks shift with the tides, so trips depend on the day's conditions — book the evening before. Combine with a snorkel stop on the way. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water are essential; the only shade is the boat.
6. Dolphin Sunset Cruise
₹1,500–₹2,800/personLate afternoon⏱ 2 hours
In the late afternoon, boats head into the channels around northern Ari Atoll to find pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins, which ride the bow waves and leap against the setting sun. It is one of the most reliable and most loved Thoddoo excursions, and a beautiful way to end a day on the water.
Sightings are common but wild. Bring a light layer for the breeze on the way back. Often bundled with a sandbank or snorkel trip into a full day.
7. Whale Shark Excursion (South Ari)
₹6,000–₹12,000/personFull day, early departure⏱ 8–10 hours
Thoddoo sits in Ari Atoll, home to the Maldives' famous year-round whale sharks along the South Ari reef edge. Full-day excursions run south to swim alongside these gentle giants, with the chance of manta rays too. It is a long boat day across the atoll but a genuine bucket-list experience.
These are long, early trips. Sightings are wild and never guaranteed, but South Ari has the best year-round odds anywhere. Take motion-sickness tablets if you are prone, and keep a respectful distance as the guides instruct.
8. Thoddoo Village & Local Life
FreeAnytime; mornings and evenings best⏱ 1 hour
Behind the beach, Thoddoo is a settled farming and fishing community of a couple of thousand people, with an old, distinct island identity. Sandy lanes, coral-stone houses, a harbour, mosques, small shops and the fields beyond — wandering the village is a relaxed, authentic glimpse of a self-sufficient Maldivian island far from the resorts.
Dress modestly in the village and greet people warmly. Late afternoon, when farmers return and the heat eases, is the loveliest time to stroll. Ask before photographing residents. Pick up a fresh papaya or coconut from a local stall.
9. Island Cycle Tour
Bike hire ₹300–₹600/dayDaytime⏱ Half day
Thoddoo is large and green enough to enjoy on two wheels, with quiet lanes winding between fruit farms, fields and palm groves out to the beaches. A cycle tour links the watermelon and papaya farms, the village and the bikini beach, giving a real sense of this unique agricultural island.
Roads are flat and quiet — easy cycling for all levels. Combine farms, village and beach in one relaxed loop. Carry water and sun protection; the farm stretches have little shade.
10. Night Fishing Trip
₹1,200–₹2,500/personAfter sunset⏱ 2–3 hours
A traditional Maldivian hand-line fishing trip aboard a wooden dhoni after dark, drifting over the reefs where snapper, grouper and emperor fish bite at night. The crew teach you the simple technique, and many guesthouses will grill your catch for dinner — a genuinely local island evening.
No experience needed. Ask whether your guesthouse will cook the catch (most do for a small fee). Calm dry-season nights are best; trips can be cancelled in rough seas.
All prices are approximate (2026). Confirm with us before booking.

Common questions from Indian travelers planning a Thoddoo trip.
Is Thoddoo worth visiting from India?
Yes — it's one of the most rewarding local islands in the Maldives, combining a long, beautiful bikini beach with the country's unique "fruit island" farms. It's calmer and greener than busy Maafushi, with excellent snorkelling and turtles, and it's easily reached by speedboat from Malé. Great for first-timers, families and couples on a budget.
How many days do I need in Thoddoo?
Two to four nights. Two gives a proper taste — beach, reef and a farm cycle. Three or four lets you add a whale-shark or sandbank day, more snorkelling, and time to settle into the island's gentle pace.
What makes Thoddoo different from other local islands?
Its farms. Thoddoo is the Maldives' agricultural heartland, growing watermelon, papaya and vegetables for the whole country. You get a green, cultivated interior unlike any sandy resort island, plus one of the longest and loveliest tourist beaches of any guesthouse island.
Is Thoddoo safe for Indian travellers?
Very safe. It is a friendly, settled farming and fishing community with very low crime, used to international guests, and English is widely spoken alongside Dhivehi. It suits families, couples, women and solo travellers well.
What is the best time to visit Thoddoo from India?
November to April, the dry north-east monsoon, brings calm seas, clear water and reliable excursions, with February and March the sunniest peak. May to November is the green, value season — warmer, rainier, with the fruit fields at their lushest.
How much does a Thoddoo trip cost from India?
Excluding flights, budget roughly ₹4,000–₹8,000 per person per night for a guesthouse with breakfast, plus around ₹1,500–₹3,000 per excursion and ₹2,500–₹4,000 for the speedboat transfer. Round-trip flights to Malé from India typically run ₹25,000–₹55,000.
Can I drink alcohol on Thoddoo?
No — Thoddoo is an inhabited Muslim island and sells no alcohol. For a drink, take a day pass to a nearby Ari Atoll resort or join a liveaboard. Guesthouses serve excellent fresh fruit juices instead.
Is Thoddoo good for snorkelling and turtles?
Yes. A healthy reef rings the island, often snorkellable straight off the beach, with green and hawksbill turtles, reef fish and occasional reef sharks. Boat trips reach further reefs and reliable turtle spots, and South Ari's whale sharks are a day trip away.
How do I get from Malé airport to Thoddoo?
Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE), then cross to Thoddoo by speedboat (around 90 minutes) or by seaplane for the scenic option. Crossings are daylight-only, so aim to land before mid-afternoon. We arrange the transfer for every traveller.
Is Thoddoo suitable for vegetarians?
Excellently so — the farms mean abundant fresh vegetables and fruit. Roshi, dhal and vegetable curries, rice, salads, watermelon and papaya are all easy, and kitchens adapt happily. Indian travellers will also find familiar spices.
Is Thoddoo good for a honeymoon?
It can be lovely and very affordable — long beach, sunsets, sandbank picnics and dolphin cruises are all romantic. For the overwater-villa dream, we pair Thoddoo with a night or two on a nearby Ari Atoll resort island, giving you both local charm and luxury.
