Overview of Dhigurah

Dhigurah is a long, slender ribbon of an island in South Ari Atoll — its very name means "long island" in Dhivehi — and it is famous for two things: a stunning beach and the whale sharks that cruise the reef just offshore. At one end of the island a narrow strip of white sand tapers away into the lagoon for the better part of three kilometres, a natural sandbank you can walk far out into the turquoise sea. At the other end is a small, friendly fishing village turned guesthouse hub. In between runs a green spine of palms and scrub. It is one of the most beautiful local islands in the Maldives, and one of the best value.

For Indian travellers, Dhigurah is a dream pairing of beach and marine life. South Ari Atoll is the most reliable place on Earth to swim with whale sharks year-round, and Dhigurah sits right on the protected reef where they feed — so a whale-shark snorkelling trip is a short boat ride, not a marathon. Add manta rays, turtles, reef sharks and some of the country's finest dive sites, all reachable on a budget from a local-island guesthouse, and you have a destination that punches far above its price. Divers and snorkellers love it; so do couples who simply want that endless empty beach.

Getting here is straightforward: a direct speedboat from Malé, or a quick domestic flight to South Ari's airport followed by a short boat hop. As an inhabited Muslim island, Dhigurah sells no alcohol, asks for modest dress in the village, and has a designated bikini-beach area for swimwear. Two to four nights suits most travellers — long enough to chase whale sharks, dive or snorkel the reefs, walk the great sandbank at sunset, and unwind into the slow, sunlit rhythm of South Ari.

Best Time to Visit Dhigurah

Dhigurah follows the Maldives' two-monsoon pattern. The dry north-east monsoon (Iruvai), roughly December to April, brings calm seas, clear skies and superb visibility for diving and whale-shark snorkelling, while the wet south-west monsoon (Hulhangu), May to November, is warmer and rainier with livelier seas, lower prices and a plankton bloom that draws plenty of marine life. The headline whale sharks are present year-round, so the diving and snorkelling never really stop. Temperatures stay 27–31°C, with a sea of 28–30°C.

For Indian travelers: Best months for Indian travellers: November to April — calm lagoon, clear water, the best visibility for diving and whale-shark snorkelling, and the easiest speedboat crossings. February and March are the sunniest peak. May to November is the green, value season with warmer rain, lower guesthouse rates, and excellent marine life when the plankton blooms. Whale sharks are seen all year.

Long tapering white sandbank stretching into the turquoise lagoon at Dhigurah Maldives

1. The 3km Sandbank Beach

Free Daylight; sunrise and sunset best ⏱ Half day

Dhigurah's signature sight — a long, narrow spit of brilliant white sand that tapers away from the island for nearly three kilometres into the lagoon, like a natural sandbank you can walk far out into the sea. With turquoise water on both sides and barely anyone around, it is one of the most beautiful and photogenic beaches in the Maldives, and the heart of the island's appeal.

Walk out along the spit at sunrise or sunset for the best light and total solitude — it can be a long walk, so take water and sun protection. Swimwear is allowed in the designated tourist beach area; cover up in the village. The tip of the sandbank shifts with the tides.
Whale shark swimming below snorkellers off Dhigurah South Ari Atoll Maldives

2. Whale Shark Snorkelling

₹4,000–₹8,000/person (half to full day) Daily departures, weather permitting ⏱ 4–8 hours

The reason many travellers come to Dhigurah. The South Ari reef edge, right off the island, is the most reliable place on Earth to encounter whale sharks year-round — and from Dhigurah, the snorkelling trips are short, not the long marathon crossings other islands require. Swimming beside one of these gentle giants, up to 10 metres long, in the open blue is an unforgettable, only-in-the-Maldives experience.

Because Dhigurah sits on the whale-shark reef, trips are shorter and the odds are excellent — though sightings are always wild and never guaranteed. Listen to the guides and keep a respectful distance from the animals. Visibility is best in the dry season. Take motion-sickness tablets if you are prone.
Manta ray gliding over a cleaning station near Dhigurah South Ari Maldives

3. Manta Ray Point

₹3,000–₹6,000/person Seasonal, scheduled trips ⏱ Half day

Alongside the whale sharks, South Ari Atoll is rich in manta rays, which visit cleaning stations and feed on the plankton blooms — especially during the south-west monsoon. Snorkelling or diving with these graceful, winged giants as they soar overhead is a highlight of any Dhigurah trip, and a perfect complement to the whale sharks.

Manta activity is strongest in the wetter months (around May to November) when plankton is abundant, though they appear year-round. Ask your dive centre when sightings have been best. Calm, neutral behaviour in the water gives the closest encounters.
Scuba diver over a coral reef wall in South Ari Atoll near Dhigurah Maldives

4. Scuba Diving (South Ari Reefs)

Try-dive ₹4,000–₹6,000; fun dive ₹3,500–₹5,500 Morning and afternoon dives ⏱ Half day per dive trip

Dhigurah has excellent PADI dive centres and sits among some of the Maldives' finest dive sites — channels (kandus), thilas and reefs busy with grey and whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleon wrasse, turtles and dense coral life, plus the big-animal chances of whale sharks and mantas. It is one of the best-value places in the country to dive or learn to dive.

Try-dives need no experience and run in calm water; certification takes three to four days. Channel dives are tide-dependent, which the centres schedule for you. Dry season gives the clearest water. Bring your certification card and logbook.

5. House Reef & Snorkelling Safari

Free off the beach; boat trips ₹1,500–₹3,000 Daylight ⏱ 1–3 hours

Dhigurah is fringed by a healthy reef you can often snorkel straight off the beach, with coral gardens busy with parrotfish, angelfish and the chance of turtles and reef sharks. Boat-based snorkelling safaris visit further reefs and turtle spots, and in South Ari there is always the chance a bigger pelagic animal cruises past.

Ask your guesthouse where the reef drop-off is closest for shore snorkelling. Visibility is best December to April. Never touch or stand on the coral. A rash vest and reef-safe sunscreen are essential.

6. Sandbank Picnic Trip

₹1,500–₹3,000/person Half-day, weather permitting ⏱ 3–5 hours

Beyond Dhigurah's own great sandbank, boat trips reach bare offshore sandbanks in the South Ari lagoon — strips of pure white sand with nothing on them but open turquoise sea. Guesthouses drop you on a private sandbank with snorkelling gear, shade and a picnic, for a classic desert-island afternoon.

Sandbanks shift with the tides, so trips depend on the day's conditions — book the evening before. Combine with a snorkel or whale-shark stop. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water are essential; the only shade is the boat.
Spinner dolphins beside a boat at sunset near Dhigurah South Ari Maldives

7. Dolphin Sunset Cruise

₹1,500–₹2,800/person Late afternoon ⏱ 2 hours

In the late afternoon, boats head into the South Ari channels to find pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins, which ride the bow waves and leap against the setting sun. It is a reliable and much-loved Dhigurah excursion, and a lovely way to round off a day on the water.

Sightings are common but wild. Bring a light layer for the breeze on the way back. Often bundled with a sandbank or snorkel trip into a full day.
Green turtle gliding over the reef near Dhigurah Maldives

8. Turtle Snorkelling Spot

₹1,500–₹3,000/person Daylight ⏱ 2–3 hours

The reefs and seagrass beds around Dhigurah are good turtle habitat, and short boat trips visit the spots where green and hawksbill turtles reliably feed. Snorkelling quietly beside a wild turtle in clear, warm water is one of the island's gentler highlights, often combined with a reef stop.

Keep a respectful distance and never touch or chase the turtles. Calm dry-season mornings give the best visibility. Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest are essential.

9. Dhigurah Village & Local Life

Free Anytime; mornings and evenings best ⏱ 1 hour

At the inhabited end of the island, Dhigurah is a small, friendly fishing community turned guesthouse hub — sandy lanes, coral-stone houses, a harbour, a mosque and a few shops, with the long green spine of the island stretching away beyond. Wandering the village is a relaxed, authentic glimpse of South Ari life, far from the resorts.

Dress modestly in the village and greet people warmly. Late afternoon, when the fishing boats return and the heat eases, is the loveliest time to stroll. Ask before photographing residents. Pick up a fresh coconut from a local stall.
Hand-line night fishing from a traditional dhoni near Dhigurah Maldives

10. Night Fishing Trip

₹1,200–₹2,500/person After sunset ⏱ 2–3 hours

A traditional Maldivian hand-line fishing trip aboard a wooden dhoni after dark, drifting over the reefs where snapper, grouper and emperor fish bite at night. The crew teach you the simple technique, and many guesthouses will grill your catch for dinner — a genuinely local island evening.

No experience needed. Ask whether your guesthouse will cook the catch (most do for a small fee). Calm dry-season nights are best; trips can be cancelled in rough seas.

Practical Tips for Indian Travelers

Whale Sharks on Your Doorstep

Dhigurah sits right on the South Ari whale-shark reef, so trips are short and the odds excellent — and they run year-round. Sightings are wild and never guaranteed, but this is the best place in the Maldives to try.

Walk the 3km Sandbank

Dhigurah's tapering white sandbank is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Walk it at sunrise or sunset for total solitude and the best light — take water, it's a long way out.

Brilliant, Affordable Diving

South Ari has some of the Maldives' finest dive sites, and Dhigurah's PADI centres are great value. A try-dive needs no experience; certification takes three to four days. Reef sharks, mantas and big animals abound.

Mantas Too

Beyond whale sharks, South Ari is rich in manta rays, especially in the wetter months when plankton blooms. Ask your dive centre when manta sightings have been strongest.

Respect the Local-Island Dress Code

Dhigurah is an inhabited Muslim island. Cover shoulders and knees in the village; swimwear is for the designated bikini-beach area and excursions only.

No Alcohol on the Island

No alcohol is sold on Dhigurah. For a drink, take a day pass to a nearby South Ari resort or a liveaboard. Guesthouses serve fresh juices and coconuts instead.

Two Ways to Arrive

Reach Dhigurah by direct speedboat from Malé, or by domestic flight to Maamigili plus a short boat. Both are daylight-only, so land in the morning or early afternoon. We arrange the best option.

Turtles & Reef Life

The reefs around Dhigurah hold green and hawksbill turtles, reef fish and reef sharks. Keep your distance, never touch them, and don't stand on coral.

Easy for Vegetarians

Roshi, dhal and vegetable curries, rice, salads and fresh fruit are on every menu, and kitchens adapt happily. Indian travellers will find familiar spices and a couple of cafés doing simple veg meals.

USD & Cards Both Work

Guesthouses and dive centres price in US dollars and mostly take cards, though excursions and small shops may want USD cash. The local Rufiyaa (MVR) is rarely needed.

Grab a SIM at the Airport

Pick up a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo tourist SIM at Velana, or use an eSIM, so you can share those whale-shark photos straight away.

Best Conditions Nov–Apr

The dry monsoon brings calm seas and clear water for diving and whale-shark snorkelling. May–November is the green, value season with warmer rain and strong manta activity.

Insure Your Diving

If you plan to dive, make sure your travel insurance covers scuba. South Ari's channel dives can be deeper and current-fed, so sensible cover is wise.

Romantic on a Budget

The endless sandbank, sunsets and dolphin cruises are very romantic. Pair Dhigurah with a nearby South Ari resort overwater villa for both local charm and luxury — we arrange the split.

Power Plugs

The Maldives mainly uses the UK-style Type G three-pin plug. Indian Type D plugs do not fit, so bring a universal adapter.
