South Ari Atoll is, quite simply, the best place in the Maldives to swim with whale sharks — and one of the very few places on earth you can do it all year round. Along the southern reef edge lies the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where these gentle giants, the largest fish in the sea, cruise the shallows feeding on plankton in every season. Snorkellers slip into the water beside them as they glide past, harmless and serene. It is the headline experience of an atoll that also happens to be one of the Maldives' most rewarding for resorts, reefs and island life.
Beyond the whale sharks, South Ari (part of the wider Ari Atoll) is a classic Maldivian dreamscape — turquoise lagoons, long white sandbanks and a scatter of palm-fringed islands. Two local islands anchor the budget and mid-range scene: Dhigurah, famous for its three-kilometre sandbank stretching into the ocean, and Dhangethi, a quieter, traditional island with a heritage feel. Around them sit some of the country's finest resorts, from family-friendly all-inclusives to overwater-villa flagships, many with manta and reef diving on the doorstep.
For Indian travellers, South Ari Atoll is a strong all-rounder and a honeymoon favourite. Reached by a scenic seaplane or speedboat from Malé, it suits everyone — budget travellers in Dhigurah guesthouses, families in mid-range resorts, and couples in overwater villas. Most stay three to five nights, building the trip around a whale shark excursion, plenty of reef snorkelling, a sandbank picnic and slow island time. With sightings possible in any month, you can travel for the best weather (the dry season, November–April) and still expect the big-animal magic.
Best Time to Visit South Ari Atoll
South Ari Atoll has the Maldives' two-monsoon climate, but its great advantage is that whale sharks are present year-round, so you don't have to compromise the wildlife for the weather. The dry north-east monsoon (November–April) brings the calmest seas and best visibility; the wet south-west monsoon (May–October) is warmer and more humid with passing showers (and often the best manta activity).
For Indian travelers: Best months for Indian travellers: November to April for calm seas, sunshine and superb snorkelling visibility. But whale sharks can be seen in any month, so the choice is really about weather. May to October is wetter, quieter and better value, with strong manta and reef activity.

$60–$130 per person (excursion)Morning and afternoon trips⏱ Half day
The signature experience of South Ari Atoll and one of the great wildlife encounters on earth — snorkelling beside whale sharks, the world's largest fish, in the South Ari Marine Protected Area along the atoll's southern reef. Entirely harmless filter-feeders, they cruise the shallows year-round, making this the most reliable whale shark spot in the Maldives.
Sightings are best in calm morning seas. Keep the required distance, never touch the shark, and don't use flash. A whale shark can be 8–12 metres long — stay calm and let it pass.
2. Dhigurah Sandbank Beach
FreeAny time⏱ Half day
Dhigurah's most famous feature is its three-kilometre sandbank, a finger of pure white sand reaching out into a luminous turquoise lagoon at the island's southern tip. You can walk almost to the horizon with water on both sides — one of the most photogenic spots in the Maldives, and a brilliant swimming and snorkelling beach.
Walk out at low tide for the full sandbank. The tip has a designated bikini beach for swimwear; cover up in the village. Sunrise and sunset here are spectacular.
3. Dhangethi Island & Heritage
FreeAny time⏱ Half day
Dhangethi is a quieter, more traditional local island with a strong sense of heritage — a small museum of old Maldivian artefacts, coral-stone buildings, and a relaxed pace far from the resort crowds. It offers excellent-value guesthouses and easy access to the whale shark area and nearby reefs.
Visit the small island museum for a glimpse of old Maldivian life. Dress modestly in the village; use the bikini beach for swimwear.
4. House Reef Snorkelling
Free–$30Daytime⏱ 1–2 hours
Many South Ari islands have superb house reefs just off the beach — coral gardens alive with turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays, moray eels and clouds of tropical fish. The clear, warm water makes even casual snorkelling exceptional, and turtles are a near-daily sight on the better reefs.
Snorkel at high tide for easier reef access. Wear a rash guard, use reef-safe sunscreen, and never touch or stand on the coral.
5. Manta Point Snorkelling & Diving
$50–$100 per personDaytime⏱ Half day
Ari Atoll is famous for its manta cleaning stations, where reef mantas glide in to be cleaned by small wrasse. Snorkellers and divers can watch these graceful giants hover and loop overhead — a calmer, more intimate manta encounter than the seasonal feeding frenzies elsewhere, and often combined with a whale shark trip.
Hover still and let the mantas settle over the station. Manta activity is strong in the south-west monsoon (May–Nov) but possible year-round.
6. Sandbank Picnic Trip
$40–$100 per personDay trips⏱ Half day
A boat to a bare white sandbank in the middle of the lagoon for swimming, snorkelling and a barbecue lunch — the quintessential Maldivian castaway day. In South Ari's clear, shallow water these sandbanks gleam like mirages and make for unforgettable photos.
Go early before the heat builds. There is no shade on a sandbank, so bring water, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
7. Scuba Diving (Ari Atoll Sites)
From $60 per diveDaily⏱ Half to full day
Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives' premier dive regions — thilas (coral pinnacles), channel drifts and reef walls draped in soft coral, with mantas, grey reef sharks, turtles and the famous whale sharks. World-class sites like Kudarah Thila and Maaya Thila draw divers from around the globe.
A try-dive needs no certification. Best visibility in the dry season. Book through your resort or guesthouse dive centre.
8. Sunset Dolphin Cruise
$40–$70 per personLate afternoon⏱ 2–3 hours
A traditional dhoni cruise into the channels at dusk, where pods of spinner dolphins ride the bow waves against a blazing Indian Ocean sunset. One of the most reliable and beautiful evening outings in the atoll.
Book the sunset slot and bring a light layer for the breeze on the water. Sightings are common but never guaranteed.
9. Turtle Snorkelling Spots
$30–$60 per personDaytime⏱ Half day
South Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the Maldives to snorkel with green and hawksbill turtles, which graze the seagrass and reef shallows around several islands. Guided turtle trips visit reliable spots where you can watch these gentle reptiles glide and surface for air.
Keep your distance and never chase or touch the turtles. Morning trips in calm water give the clearest sightings.
10. Local Island Cultural Walk
Free / guided from $15Daytime⏱ 1–2 hours
A guided walk through Dhigurah or Dhangethi reveals everyday Maldivian life — coral-stone mosques, boat-builders, island gardens and friendly tea shops. A grounding cultural counterpoint to the reef and resort experience, and a chance to support local communities directly.
Dress modestly in the village and ask before photographing people. Combine with a stop at a local café for short eats and tea.
11. Night Fishing on a Dhoni
$40–$70 per personEvening⏱ 2–3 hours
A traditional Maldivian evening — head out on a dhoni after sunset and drop hand-lines for reef fish under the stars, the way islanders have fished for generations. Your catch is often grilled and served back on the island or boat. Relaxed, fun and authentic.
A great family activity. Bring a light layer for the sea breeze. Even a small catch is grilled fresh for dinner.
12. Bioluminescence & Night Snorkel
Free–$60After dark⏱ 1 hour
On dark, moonless nights the lagoons of South Ari can sparkle with bioluminescent plankton — every wave and footstep igniting in blue-green light. Guided night snorkels also reveal a different reef cast: hunting morays, sleeping turtles and nocturnal crustaceans.
Bioluminescence is brightest on moonless nights. Walk the shoreline or join a guided night snorkel; let your eyes adjust to the dark.
13. Spa & Overwater Wellness
From $80 per treatmentResort hours⏱ 1–2 hours
South Ari's resorts are renowned for their spas — overwater and beachside pavilions offering massages, couples' rituals and yoga with the lagoon lapping beneath you. After a day in the water with whale sharks, an ocean-view massage is the perfect reward.
Book overwater spa treatments in advance, especially for honeymoons. Many resorts include a welcome treatment for couples.
14. Dhigurah Bikini Beach & Watersports
From $20 per activity9:00 AM – 6:00 PM⏱ 1–3 hours
Dhigurah's tourist beach is a hub for affordable watersports — kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and jet skis on a calm, sheltered lagoon. It is an easy, budget-friendly way to enjoy the water without staying at a resort, with the famous sandbank right alongside.
The lagoon is calm and ideal for first-timers. Morning is least windy for paddleboarding. Combine with a sandbank walk.
15. Sunset Beach & Sandbank Photography
FreeSunset⏱ 1 hour
With its long sandbanks and open western horizon, South Ari Atoll delivers some of the Maldives' finest sunsets. Walking out along the Dhigurah sandbank as the sky turns gold and pink, water on both sides, is a quietly magical end to the day — and a photographer's dream.
Arrive 30 minutes before sunset for the best light. The sandbank tip, with reflections on both sides, gives the most dramatic shots.
All prices are approximate (2026). Confirm with us before booking.

Nightlife in South Ari Atoll
South Ari Atoll is about ocean and tranquillity rather than nightlife. On the local islands (Dhigurah, Dhangethi) there is no alcohol and evenings are low-key — cafés, beach walks and stargazing. On resort islands, the night means sunset cocktails, beach dinners and the occasional event under a brilliant, star-filled sky.
Sunset Cocktails (Resorts)
Watching the sun sink into the Indian Ocean from a beach bar or overwater deck, drink in hand, is the atoll's signature evening — available on resort islands only.
Serene, romantic, resort-only

Night Fishing & Catch Grill
An evening dhoni fishing trip followed by a grill of your catch on the beach — a uniquely Maldivian way to spend the night, fun for families.

Note for Indian travelers: If you want a drink in the evening, stay on a resort island — alcohol is not available on Dhigurah or Dhangethi. Guesthouse stays are alcohol-free but safe, friendly and far cheaper, with the bonus of easy whale shark access. Many travellers mix a local-island stay for value with a resort night for the cocktails.

Suggested Itineraries
Whether you have a weekend or a week, here are tried-and-tested day-by-day plans for South Ari Atoll and the surrounding region.
Ready to plan your South Ari Atoll trip?
Tell us your travel dates and we'll build a personalised itinerary with hotels, transfers, and experiences — at no extra cost.
South Ari is the most reliable place in the Maldives for whale sharks, present in every month. You can travel for the best weather (Nov–April) and still expect the big-animal magic.
Three nights minimum, four ideal
Two nights is too rushed for a whale shark trip plus reef and beach time. Four nights gives you the whale sharks, mantas, a sandbank day and slow island time without rushing.
Guesthouse or resort?
Dhigurah and Dhangethi guesthouses ($50–$150) are great value and alcohol-free, with easy whale shark access. Resorts ($250–$3,000) add overwater villas, alcohol and fine dining. Many travellers do both.
A top honeymoon pick
South Ari's overwater-villa resorts are among the Maldives' finest. Pair a couple of luxury nights with the whale sharks and a private sandbank dinner for the perfect honeymoon. We arrange honeymoon perks.
Snorkel, don't just sunbathe
The whale sharks, mantas and turtles are the whole point — even non-swimmers can join with a life vest. Choose small-group trips and listen to the marine guide's briefing.
Reef-safe SPF 50+, reapplied
The equatorial sun off white sand and clear water is intense. Use reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and a hat, and reapply after every swim.
Bikini beach on local islands
Dhigurah and Dhangethi are inhabited — cover shoulders and knees in the village and use the marked bikini beach for swimwear. On private resort islands, normal beachwear is fine everywhere.
Alcohol on resorts only
Alcohol is served only on resort islands, not on Dhigurah or Dhangethi. Do not pack alcohol — it is confiscated at the airport. Plan drinks for your resort stay.
Free visa on arrival
Indians get a free 30-day visa on arrival — no fee, no application. Carry a passport valid 6+ months, a confirmed booking and a return ticket, and complete the IMUGA online arrival card before flying.
🛩️
Seaplanes fly in daylight only
Resort seaplane transfers operate in daylight. Time your international flight so you can connect to a daytime seaplane, or you may overnight near the airport — we plan this for you.
Vegetarian with notice
Resorts and guesthouses cater for vegetarians with advance notice; luxury resorts do Indian-style veg (paneer, dal, rotis). Watch for hidden Maldive fish in local dishes; flag Jain or vegan needs at booking.
USD and Rufiyaa
Resorts price in US dollars and take cards; the local currency is the Rufiyaa (MVR). Carry small USD for tips, excursions and local-island shops.
Bring a waterproof camera
A GoPro or waterproof camera is essential for whale sharks and mantas. Keep your distance, never touch the animals, and avoid flash near them.
Respect the wildlife rules
The Marine Protected Area has strict rules — keep the required distance from whale sharks, no touching, no chasing. It protects the animals and keeps the experience sustainable.
Stay hydrated
Heat and saltwater days dehydrate you quickly. Drink plenty of bottled or filtered water; resorts supply it in villas.
UK-style adapter
The Maldives mainly uses UK-style Type G sockets. Indian plugs do not fit — pack a universal adapter. Resorts can usually lend one.
Don't miss the sandbank sunset
Walking the Dhigurah sandbank at sunset, water on both sides, is one of the Maldives' best sights. Arrive 30 minutes before sundown for the light.
Pack light and beachy
Linen, swimwear, a rash guard and flip-flops are all you need — plus modest cover-ups for local islands and one smart outfit for a resort dinner.
Good signal and Wi-Fi
Coverage is decent across the atoll; resorts have Wi-Fi. Grab a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo tourist SIM at the airport. Download offline maps before you go.
Travel insurance recommended
Water activities and remote islands make travel insurance with medical and dive cover sensible. Serious cases are transferred to Malé, so cover for evacuation is worthwhile.
Common questions from Indian travelers planning a South Ari Atoll trip.
Can I swim with whale sharks in South Ari Atoll?
Yes — it is the best place in the Maldives to do so, and one of the few places on earth where whale sharks are present year-round. The South Ari Marine Protected Area along the atoll's southern reef is their feeding ground, and snorkel excursions run in every season. The sharks are harmless filter-feeders; trips follow strict rules to keep both you and the animals safe.
How many days do I need in South Ari Atoll?
Three nights minimum, four ideal. Three nights covers a whale shark trip, a manta or turtle snorkel and a sandbank day. Four nights adds slower beach and spa time. Honeymooners can comfortably fill five to six nights, perhaps splitting between a local island and an overwater resort.
Is South Ari Atoll good for an Indian honeymoon?
Excellent. South Ari is home to some of the Maldives' finest overwater-villa resorts, with private reefs, spas, fine dining and seaplane access. The combination of barefoot luxury, year-round whale sharks, sandbank sunsets and a private sandbank dinner makes it a superb honeymoon. We arrange honeymoon perks — flowers, cake, special dinners — on request.
Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?
No advance visa is needed. All nationalities, including Indians, receive a free 30-day visa on arrival, with no fee. You need a passport valid 6+ months, a confirmed booking and a return ticket, plus the completed IMUGA online arrival card. There is no e-visa.
What is the best time to visit South Ari Atoll?
November to April for the calmest seas, sunshine and best snorkelling visibility — but whale sharks are seen year-round, so you don't have to compromise the wildlife for the weather. May to October is wetter, quieter and better value, with strong manta and reef activity. January and February are peak season.
How much does a South Ari Atoll trip cost from India?
It depends on style. Return flights India–Malé run roughly ₹14,000–₹35,000. On the ground, Dhigurah/Dhangethi guesthouses cost about $50–$150 a night, mid-range resorts $250–$500, and luxury overwater villas $800–$3,000. Add the seaplane or speedboat transfer and whale shark excursion. We bundle flights, transfers and stays for the best value — contact us for a quote.
Is South Ari Atoll safe for Indian travellers?
Very safe. It is one of the Maldives' most established tourism areas, with licensed operators, marine guides and strict wildlife rules. The main considerations are the strong sun, ocean currents and respecting the whale sharks and mantas. Listen to your guides. Serious medical cases are transferred to Malé, so travel insurance is wise.
Is South Ari Atoll vegetarian-friendly?
Yes, with notice. Resorts and guesthouses cater for vegetarians, and luxury resorts prepare Indian-style vegetarian (paneer, dal, rotis) on request. Maldivian local dishes are fish-based, so ask about hidden Maldive fish (rihaakuru). Flag strict Jain or vegan diets when booking. Resort breakfast buffets are generally vegetarian-friendly.
How do I get to South Ari Atoll from Malé?
From Velana International Airport, resorts are reached by a scenic seaplane (about 25–30 minutes, daylight only); the local islands of Dhigurah and Dhangethi are reached by speedboat (about 1–1.5 hours). Some resorts use the Maamigili domestic airport plus a short boat. We arrange the whole transfer door-to-door, timed to your flights.
What activities are there besides whale sharks?
Plenty — manta cleaning stations, turtle snorkelling, house-reef snorkelling, world-class scuba diving (Kudarah Thila, Maaya Thila), sandbank picnics, the famous Dhigurah sandbank, sunset dolphin cruises, night fishing, bioluminescence, watersports and overwater spa treatments. South Ari is a true all-rounder.
Should I stay on a local island or a resort?
Both are great. Dhigurah and Dhangethi guesthouses are far cheaper, alcohol-free and offer easy whale shark access and a genuine taste of island life. Resorts add overwater villas, alcohol, fine dining and seaplane transfers — ideal for honeymoons. Many travellers combine a guesthouse stretch for value with a resort stretch for luxury.
Is snorkelling or scuba diving better in South Ari Atoll?
Snorkelling is the better choice for most — the whale sharks, mantas and turtles are all snorkel-accessible in the shallows, and even non-swimmers can join with a life vest. Scuba diving is also world-class (thilas, channels, soft coral) but needs certification or a supervised try-dive. Start with the snorkelling; add a discover-scuba dive if you want to go deeper. Best visibility is in the dry season.
