Overview of Lhaviyani Atoll

Lhaviyani Atoll (Faadhippolhu Atoll) is one of the Maldives' most rewarding resort regions — a compact, beautifully sheltered atoll in the north-central Maldives whose handful of resort islands have earned a devoted following among divers, snorkellers and families alike. Cluster names like Kuredu, Hurawalhi and Komandoo are well known to anyone who has researched a Maldives holiday: relaxed, palm-fringed islands ringed by powder-white beaches and glowing lagoons, each with its own house reef and dive base. With several resorts in easy reach of one another, plus rich channels, wrecks and cleaning stations, Lhaviyani packs an extraordinary amount of marine life into a small, accessible area.

For Indian travellers, Lhaviyani Atoll is the classic Maldives dream — barefoot luxury, overwater villas, turquoise lagoons and superb diving — within a comfortable transfer of Malé. The atoll is famous in diving circles for the Kuredu Express, an exhilarating channel drift alive with sharks, eagle rays and turtles, and for the popular Shipyard wreck dives, where two ships rest in shallow water teeming with fish. Green turtles are so common on the house reefs that snorkellers see them daily, and manta rays glide into the atoll's cleaning stations in season. Resorts here range from family-friendly favourites to romantic adults-only and luxury overwater properties, so there is a Lhaviyani island for every kind of traveller.

Lhaviyani is reached by a quick domestic flight from Malé to Lhaviyani's airport (or to nearby Ifuru) followed by a short speedboat, or by a direct speedboat transfer where the resort offers it — your resort arranges everything to coincide with your arrival. Because this is a resort atoll rather than a local-island community, you stay full-board or all-inclusive on a private island, with alcohol, spa, watersports and dive centre all on site. A typical stay is four to seven nights of diving, snorkelling, lagoon watersports and pure relaxation. Lhaviyani pairs well with a night in Malé/Hulhumalé on arrival, and is an outstanding choice for honeymooners, dive enthusiasts and families seeking a quintessential Maldives resort holiday.

Best Time to Visit Lhaviyani Atoll

Lhaviyani Atoll follows the Maldives' two-monsoon rhythm. The dry northeast monsoon (Iruvai), roughly November to April, brings calm seas, sunshine and the clearest underwater visibility — peak season for diving the channels and wrecks. The wet southwest monsoon (Hulhangu), May to October, brings warmer, greener seas and the occasional squall, plus the plankton blooms that draw mantas to the atoll's cleaning stations.

For Indian travelers: Best months for Indian travellers: November to April for reliable sunshine, calm seas and the best visibility on the Kuredu Express, the Shipyard wrecks and the reefs. Manta activity peaks in the plankton-rich southwest monsoon months. Temperatures hold a steady 26–31°C all year, so it is the sea state and visibility, more than the heat, that vary.
Month High °C Low °C Rainfall Notes
Jan Ideal Ideal — calm seas, sunshine, best dive visibility
Feb Ideal Ideal — peak season, clear skies
Mar Ideal Ideal — warm, dry, superb diving
Apr Ideal Excellent — hottest month, calm seas
May Ideal Good — manta season nears, fewer crowds
Jun Wetter; plankton-rich, good for mantas

Aug Similar to July; quieter resorts
Sep Improving; warm seas, low prices
Oct Settling down; shoulder-season value
Nov Ideal Excellent — seas calming, season begins
Dec Ideal Ideal — calm, sunny, festive peak season
All temperature ranges are approximate. Lhaviyani Atoll's weather can vary year to year.

Top Attractions in Lhaviyani Atoll

Grey reef sharks and eagle rays in the current on the Kuredu Express channel dive Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

1. Kuredu Express (Channel Drift Dive)

Fun dive from ~$60–$90 (with gear) Day dives, planned around the tides ⏱ Half day per dive trip

Lhaviyani's signature dive — an exhilarating channel ("kandu") drift on an incoming current near Kuredu, famous for big-fish action. Divers fly along the reef edge past grey reef and whitetip sharks, eagle rays, turtles, napoleon wrasse and schooling jacks, with the chance of mantas in season. It is one of the most thrilling channel dives in the northern Maldives.

This is an advanced current dive, best for experienced divers; a reef hook and good buoyancy help enormously. Dives are planned around the tides for the best action and safety, so follow the dive master's briefing. Visibility is best in the dry season (Nov–Apr).
Diver exploring a fish-covered shipwreck at The Shipyard Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

2. The Shipyard (Wreck Dives)

Fun dive from ~$60–$90 (with gear) Day dives ⏱ Half day per dive trip

The Shipyard is one of the Maldives' best-loved wreck sites — two ships resting close together in relatively shallow water, one with its bow breaking the surface. Encrusted in coral and swarming with snapper, batfish, groupers and the occasional reef shark and nurse shark, the wrecks make an atmospheric, photogenic dive suitable for a wide range of certifications.

Great for underwater photography thanks to the shallow depth and abundant fish. The shallower wreck is also good for less-experienced divers. Ask your dive centre about combining it with a nearby reef dive for a full morning.
Green turtle gliding over a vibrant house reef off a Lhaviyani Atoll resort island Maldives

3. House Reef Snorkelling & Turtles

Free for resort guests; gear provided/hire Daylight, best at calm mid-morning ⏱ 1–2 hours

Lhaviyani's resort islands sit on healthy house reefs you can snorkel straight from the beach, and green turtles are remarkably common here — many guests see them daily, grazing on the sea grass and surfacing to breathe. Add parrotfish, reef sharks, moray eels, rays and clouds of reef fish, and the snorkelling is some of the most rewarding in the Maldives.

Snorkel at slack tide for the calmest, clearest water. Keep a respectful distance from turtles — never touch or chase them. Never touch or stand on coral. Many resorts run guided snorkel safaris to the best spots and cleaning stations.
Manta ray gliding over a cleaning station reef in Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

4. Manta Ray Encounters (Seasonal)

Dive/snorkel trip from ~$50–$90 per person Day trips, plankton season ⏱ Half to full day

When the southwest monsoon stirs up plankton, manta rays gather at Lhaviyani's cleaning stations and feeding sites. Diving or snorkelling with these graceful giants — some with wingspans of three metres or more — gliding overhead is unforgettable. Resort dive centres run trips when conditions are right.

Manta season peaks roughly May–November with the plankton blooms, though it varies year to year. Sightings are never guaranteed. Keep low and still, never touch or chase, and let the mantas come to you. Ask your dive centre for the latest sighting reports.

5. Scuba Diving & Courses

Fun dives from ~$55–$80; courses from ~$350 Daily dive schedules ⏱ Half day

Lhaviyani is a diver's atoll, and every resort has a professional dive centre offering everything from beginner courses to expert channel dives. Beyond the Kuredu Express and the Shipyard, dozens of thilas (pinnacles), reefs and channels brim with sharks, rays, turtles, napoleon wrasse and schooling fish, often with excellent visibility.

Currents in the channels can be strong, so dive within your certification and follow the briefing. PADI and SSI courses are widely available and the warm, clear water makes learning a pleasure. A nitrox certification helps you make the most of multiple deeper dives.
Overwater villa with deck and steps into a turquoise lagoon at a Lhaviyani Atoll resort Maldives

6. Overwater Villa Stay

Luxury overwater from ~$800–$3,000/night Resort stay ⏱ Per night

The quintessential Maldives experience — a villa perched on stilts over the lagoon, with a private deck, steps straight into the warm sea, and glass floor panels at some properties. Several Lhaviyani resorts, including the well-known Hurawalhi and others, offer beautiful overwater accommodation, perfect for honeymooners and anyone wanting that classic barefoot-luxury fantasy.

Overwater villas are wonderfully romantic but pricier and a little more exposed to sun and breeze than beach villas. For families with young children, a beach villa with direct sand access is often more practical. Book overwater well ahead in peak season.
Pristine white coral sandbank in a turquoise lagoon in Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

7. Sandbank & Lagoon Picnic

Excursion from ~$40–$90 per person Morning or sunset trips ⏱ 2.5–4 hours

Lhaviyani's sheltered lagoons hide pristine coral sandbanks — curves of pure white sand sitting alone in turquoise water. Resorts offer sandbank trips, private castaway picnics and even champagne sunset excursions: swim, snorkel the surrounding reef and laze on the sand with nothing but sea and sky around you. A favourite for honeymooners.

Bring plenty of water, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and shade — there is no shade on a sandbank. Sunset trips are gorgeous and dodge the harshest sun. Resorts can arrange private dining on the sand for special occasions.
Catamaran sailing and stand-up paddleboarding in a turquoise Lhaviyani Atoll lagoon Maldives

8. Lagoon Watersports

Some free; powered sports from ~$30–$120 Daylight hours ⏱ 30 minutes to half day

The calm, clear lagoons of Lhaviyani are ideal for watersports. Resorts offer kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and, at some properties, jet skis, parasailing and wakeboarding. Non-motorised sports are often complimentary, while powered activities carry a fee.

Calm mornings are best for paddleboarding and sailing. Always wear a life jacket and stay within the marked lagoon area. Ask about beginner lessons — the flat, warm water is a great place to learn.
Overwater spa pavilion with ocean view at a Lhaviyani Atoll resort Maldives

9. Spa & Wellness

Treatments from ~$80–$300 Daytime to evening ⏱ 1–2 hours

Lhaviyani's resorts feature beautiful spas — some in overwater pavilions where you can watch fish glide beneath the treatment bed. Massages, facials, body wraps and couples' rituals using natural and aromatic oils make for a blissful complement to days in the sun and sea.

Book popular slots (sunset, couples' treatments) in advance, especially on honeymoon stays. Many resorts offer yoga and wellness sessions too. A post-dive massage works wonders.
Spinner dolphins leaping beside a dhoni at sunset in Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

10. Dolphin & Sunset Cruise

Excursion from ~$30–$60 per person Late afternoon, ~4:30–6:30 PM ⏱ 2 hours

Pods of spinner dolphins are common in Lhaviyani's channels, and a late-afternoon cruise — often on a traditional dhoni — frequently finds them riding the bow wave and leaping clear of the water. The trip doubles as a Maldivian sunset cruise, with the sky turning gold and pink over the lagoon. Relaxed and family-friendly.

Dolphin sightings are wild but odds are good in calm dry-season conditions. Bring a light layer for the breeze and a camera with a fast shutter. Many resorts serve sundowners on board.
Traditional dhoni handline reef fishing at sunset in Lhaviyani Atoll Maldives

11. Big-Game & Reef Fishing

From ~$40–$150 per person Late afternoon or morning trips ⏱ 2–4 hours

Resorts offer both traditional Maldivian sunset handline fishing — where you may pull up snapper, jobfish or grouper to be grilled for dinner — and bigger-game trolling trips for tuna, wahoo and sailfish in the deeper water beyond the atoll. A fun outing for all ages, with the catch often cooked to order.

No experience needed for sunset handline fishing — the crew shows you how. Bring a hat and water. Arrange in advance for the kitchen to cook your catch. Big-game trips are best in the early morning.
Milky Way over a powder-white beach and overwater villas at a Lhaviyani Atoll resort Maldives

12. Beach & Stargazing

Free for resort guests All day and after dark ⏱ As long as you like

Beyond the diving, Lhaviyani's resorts are simply gorgeous places to do very little — soft white beaches, hammocks slung between palms, and warm shallow water for swimming. After dark, with little light pollution, the night sky blazes with stars and the Milky Way, perfect for a romantic beach stroll or stargazing from your villa deck.

Choose a moonless night for the best stars. Ask the resort about beach barbecue or private-dining-on-the-sand evenings. The far end of the island is usually the quietest, darkest spot for stargazing.

Practical Tips for Indian Travelers

Free Visa on Arrival

Indian passport holders get a free 30-day visa on arrival — no e-visa needed. Carry a passport valid 6+ months, a confirmed resort booking and a return ticket, and fill in the IMUGA online card before you fly.

Let the Resort Handle Transfers

Reaching Lhaviyani usually means a domestic flight plus a speedboat (or a direct speedboat / seaplane at some resorts). The resort coordinates all of this with your international flight — book flights that connect to daytime transfers, as seaplanes fly only in daylight.

A Diver's Paradise

Lhaviyani is one of the best dive atolls in the Maldives — the Kuredu Express, the Shipyard wrecks, turtles and seasonal mantas. If you dive (or want to learn), choose a resort with a strong dive centre and budget for several dives.

Turtles on the House Reef

Green turtles are remarkably common on Lhaviyani's house reefs — many guests see them daily. Keep a respectful distance, never touch or chase them, and never stand on or touch coral.

Indian Food is Well Catered For

Most Lhaviyani resorts serve Indian dishes and can adjust spice levels. Vegetarians, vegans and Jain travellers are well looked after — just notify the resort when booking and remind the chef on arrival.

Alcohol is Available Here

Unlike on inhabited local islands, alcohol is freely served on resort islands. Sundowners and overwater bars are part of the experience — but pricing is resort-level, so factor drinks into your budget unless on an all-inclusive plan.

Pick the Right Island

Lhaviyani has family-friendly resorts (like Kuredu) and adults-only romantic islands (like Hurawalhi and Komandoo). Choose carefully — an adults-only island is ideal for honeymoons but not for families with children.

Beach vs Overwater Villa

Overwater villas are romantic and iconic but pricier and sun-exposed; beach villas with direct sand access are often better for families with young children. Decide based on your group and budget.

Sun & Reef Protection

The equatorial sun is strong on the water and shadeless beaches. Pack a hat, UV-protection clothing and reef-safe SPF50 sunscreen. Reef shoes help on coral shallows during snorkelling.

Mind Your No-Fly Time After Diving

Plan your final dives so you leave at least 18–24 hours before your flight home. Keep your last full day diving-free (beach, spa, snorkel) so you are not diving right before departure.

Budget for Extras

Resorts price in US dollars, and dives, excursions, spa and drinks (unless all-inclusive) add up. Consider an all-inclusive or dive package, and carry a card plus some USD cash for tips.

Connectivity

Resorts have Wi-Fi, but for data en route grab a Dhiraagu or Ooredoo tourist SIM (or eSIM) at Velana airport in Malé. Signal across the atoll is generally good.

Best Diving Nov–Apr

The dry northeast monsoon (Nov–Apr) brings calm seas and the clearest dive visibility. The wetter months are quieter, cheaper, and prime time for plankton-loving mantas at the cleaning stations.

Great for Families

Calm lagoons, easy snorkelling, kids' clubs and watersports make family-friendly Lhaviyani resorts excellent for children. Choose a beach villa and a resort with a kids' club and shallow lagoon.

Power Plug

The Maldives mainly uses the UK-style Type G three-pin plug. Indian Type D/M plugs do not fit — bring a universal travel adapter. Resorts usually have adapters, but it is safest to carry your own.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Lhaviyani Atoll questions

Common questions from Indian travelers planning a Lhaviyani Atoll trip.

What is Lhaviyani Atoll?
Lhaviyani Atoll (Faadhippolhu Atoll) is a resort region in the north-central Maldives, home to a cluster of well-regarded resort islands such as Kuredu, Hurawalhi and Komandoo. It is famous for outstanding diving — the Kuredu Express channel drift and the Shipyard wrecks — and for turtle-rich house reefs, seasonal mantas, beautiful lagoons and overwater villas.
Yes — it offers the classic Maldives resort experience (overwater villas, turquoise lagoons, fine dining) together with some of the country's best diving and snorkelling, within an easy transfer of Malé. It suits honeymooners, divers and families alike, with resorts for every style and budget.
Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) at Malé, then take a resort-arranged transfer to your island — usually a short domestic flight plus a speedboat, or a direct speedboat or seaplane at some resorts. Your resort coordinates the transfer with your international flight. Seaplanes operate in daylight only.
The Kuredu Express is a thrilling channel ("kandu") drift dive near Kuredu, one of the highlights of Lhaviyani diving. Riding an incoming current, divers see grey reef and whitetip sharks, eagle rays, turtles, napoleon wrasse and schooling fish, with mantas possible in season. It is an advanced dive best suited to experienced divers.
Outstanding. Beyond the Kuredu Express and the Shipyard wrecks, the atoll has dozens of reefs, thilas and channels rich in sharks, rays, turtles and fish, with excellent visibility in the dry season. Green turtles are common on the house reefs, making the snorkelling exceptional even for non-divers.
November to April — the dry northeast monsoon — brings calm seas, sunshine and the clearest underwater visibility, the best window for diving the channels and wrecks. The wetter months (May–October) are quieter and cheaper, and are prime time for plankton-loving mantas. Sea temperatures stay a warm 27–30°C year-round.
Resort nights vary widely — roughly $250–$500 a night for mid-range and $800–$3,000+ for luxury overwater villas, usually full-board or all-inclusive. Add international flights (₹18,000–₹40,000 return to Malé) and the resort-arranged transfer. Dives and excursions are extra unless included in a package.
Yes — most resorts serve Indian dishes and have plentiful vegetarian options, with chefs able to adjust spice levels and prepare special meals. Notify the resort of strict vegetarian, vegan or Jain needs when booking and remind the chef on arrival.
Yes. Lhaviyani is a resort atoll, and alcohol is freely served on the private resort islands and at their bars and restaurants (this differs from inhabited local islands, where alcohol is not available). Sundowners and overwater bars are part of the resort experience.
Both — but pick the right island. Family-friendly resorts such as Kuredu offer kids' clubs, calm lagoons and great value, while adults-only islands like Hurawalhi and Komandoo are ideal for honeymooners wanting romance, overwater villas and seclusion. We can match you to the perfect island.
Transfers are arranged by the resort once your stay and flights are confirmed, so share your flight details early. For diving, it is wise to pre-book courses and popular dives (and overwater villas and spa slots) in peak season, as resorts and dive boats fill up.
